14 December 2009 -- Oakland, CA The USS Potomac Association (www.usspotomac.org) announced an innovative educational plan to provide leadership training to Bay Area middle schools by establishing the USS Potomac Leader-Ship Academy. The Academy, now under initial development, will provide a history-based curriculum which combines in-classroom academic studies with a one-of-a-kind on-board leadership training and cruise experience. Once completed, the curriculum will meet California educational standards, while providing a real-life Bay cruise and leadership training opportunity aboard The Floating White House.
Fully-restored and berthed at Jack London Square, the 165-foot USS Potomac was chosen to be the Presidential Yacht and served President Franklin Roosevelt from 1936 to 1945, during turbulent times in American and world history. She was used as his recreational escape from the White House, for entertaining international dignitaries and for official government business, thus gaining the nickname - the Floating White House.
The goal of The Potomac Association is to provide a minimum of 20 Leader-Ship Academy educational programs/cruises during 2010 and increase the amount based on the public and private funding necessary to support this unique educational program
To that end, The Potomac Association is “floating” an IPO, (Immediate Potomac Opportunity) and is selling Ship Shares at $50 per share. Details on the IPO can be found at www.usspotomac.org. Additionally, sales of the Ship Shares will also provide needed funding to support the necessary maintenance, berthing, crew and administrative staff of this National Historic Landmark. This fun promotional offering does not in any way represent actual ownership in the USS Potomac.
“We intend to have the curriculum completed and begin the Leader-Ship Academy training and cruises by late spring 2010 if our funding goals are reached”, stated Potomac Association Executive Director Marti Burchell. “Importantly, we will provide our curriculum materials, in-school training and the on-board leadership training and cruising experience free-of-charge for middle schools in the Bay Area, with a particular focus on underserved populations.”
Oakland Mayor, Ronald V. Dellums stated: “I strongly encourage our community to support this (Leader-Ship Academy) program and the positive impact that it will have on our youth. The need for more educational and outreach programs in our community is great. The Academy has the potential to benefit generations of Bay Area youth and sustain the work of making this region a model in innovative and effective educational programs for the nation.”
In addition to the free middle school leadership class programs, the Academy will offer educational cruises to organized youth leadership programs, student councils, and/or other middle and high school youth leadership programs. These paid programs will be underwritten by sponsors, parents or the participating schools.
