17 January 2019 – San Francisco, CA:  In 2017 “A single ship captivated millions of Canadians and captured Canada’s promise,” remarked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, “amplifying the voices of youth and Indigenous peoples, and connecting Canadians and communities all across the country.”  For one night only, that epic journey will come to San Francisco via a close partnership with the Consulate of Canada and San Francisco’s International Ocean Film Festival: The United States Premiere of the acclaimed Canadian documentary Canada C3: Coast to Coast to Coast. Produced by the Students on Ice Foundation, this inspiring and thought-provoking documentary follows the epic Canada C3 Expedition, retracing the 150-day icebreaker journey from Toronto to Victoria through the Northwest Passage in 2017. The film will screen at San Francisco’s Cowell Theatre (Fort Mason Center) on February 6 beginning with a reception at 6pm, following by the screening at 7:15pm. A panel discussion will follow. Tickets may be purchased online at www.intloceanfilmfest.org/events.

“Over the years, our friends and colleagues at the Consulate of Canada have been among our most steadfast supporters,” said Ana Blanco, Executive Director of the San Francisco based International Ocean Film Festival. “We are honored to once again partner with them to bring an important film about our shared maritime heritage to our audience.”

Canada C3 became a voyage of reconciliation, a unique pan-Canadian scientific voyage, and a platform for art, music, story-telling, connecting, inspiring, healing, and awakening,” said Geoff Green, Founder & President of the Students on Ice Foundation and Canada C3 Expedition Leader. “Canada is a young country still learning about its past, navigating its present, and exploring its future.”

“Canada C3: Coast to Coast to Coast transports audiences on a sailing adventure exploring Canada’s coastline —the longest coastline in the world. From Lake Ontario, down the mighty St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean, through the Northwest Passage, and to the Pacific Coast. The expedition and its teams of Canadians, sailed over 25,000 kilometres, visiting communities, national parks, marine protected areas, and many other remote and extraordinary corners of Canada’s vast, beautiful and diverse country.”

Canada C3 – Coast to Coast to Coast delivers emotional, powerful and inspiring messages about the expeditions four key themes: science and the environment; truth and reconciliation, youth engagement; and diversity and inclusion, all key components in building a better Canada and a better world. Through these lenses, this historic journey served to better connect and deepen understanding amongst diverse Canadians as they shared their stories of community, place, and culture.

Evening Benefits the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert
& Cinema Diverse: the Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival

7 January 2019 – Palm Springs, CA: Once upon a time in America gay men and lesbians were harassed, humiliated and hounded from their jobs in the name of national security. Sound familiar? On Tuesday, January 22 at 7pm at The Camelot Theatre at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, the acclaimed Dezart Performs of Palm Springs hosts a special one-night-only screening of The Lavender Scare, the searing documentary by Emmy Award-Winning Josh Howard that chronicles the anti-gay purges of the 1950s. Narrated by Glenn Close and featuring the voices of David Hyde Pierce, Cynthia Nixon, Zachary Quinto and T. R. KnightThe Lavender Scare is a “compelling, well-made” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “fascinating documentary about a missing piece of our history.” (KRCB San Francisco). Tickets for the screening are $ 15 and will benefit the LGBTQ Center of the Desert and Cinema Diverse: the Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival.  Following the screening will be a panel discussion with the following: Michael Green, Founder / Artistic Director, Palm Springs Cultural Center; Jean-Marie Navetta, Director of Learning & Inclusion for PFLAG; Alexis Ortega, Director of Community Engagement, LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert; David Perry (moderator), Founder,  Rainbow Honor Walk / 10 Percent TV

The screening’s timing is not a coincidence. Currently, Dezart Performs is in preparation for its production of the stage play Perfect Arrangement by Topher Payne. Running January 11 – 20 in Palm Springs, the play deals, in fictionalized form, with the same issues dealt with in Howard’s documentary: the systemic and systematic discrimination of homosexuals in the employment of the United States government.

“In a time when the President of the United States and many states are trying to roll back hard-fought gains for the LGBT Community,” said Michael Shaw, founding artistic director of Dezart Performs.Lavender Scare is more pertinent than ever.”

In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service. In doing so, he triggered the longest witch hunt in American history.  Over the next four decades, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. However, the actions of the government had an unintended effect.  They inadvertently helped ignite the gay rights movement. In 1957, after thousands had lost their jobs, a Harvard-trained astronomer named Frank Kameny became the first person to fight his dismissal. His attempts to regain his job evolved into a lifelong fight for the rights of LGBT people.

The Lavender Scare is more than a compelling story of one man’s fight for justice,” says Shaw. “It is a chilling reminder of how easy it can be, during a time of fear and uncertainty, to trample the rights of an entire class of people in the name of patriotism and national security.

Dezart Performs, one of the Coachella Valley’s preeminent theatre companies, recognizes that the performing arts enrich the life and culture of a community, promote greater understanding and provoke insightful discussion. K-GAY, as part of Qchella Media, is a new local radio station at 106.5 FM and streamed worldwide on TuneIn Radio.   It serves the LGBTQ+ community with entertainment and information, including an on-demand podcasting platform bringing a wide variety of LGBTQ+ content to their audience in Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley and worldwide.Besides their unique and diverse programming, what sets Qchella Media Corporation apart is that they are also a non-profit media organization, where every dollar raised through advertising and their members’ support is devoted to the content, allowing their team to meet the needs of their diverse communities in the Coachella Valley.

The change comes with operations of K-GAY 106.5 and sister Smooth Favorites “CV 104.3” KHCV-FM, coming under the umbrellas of non-profit QChella Media Corporation. Led by President Elijah Hartman, the radio operations will be overseen by longtime broadcast executive Brad Fuhr, owner of the Gay Desert Guide, which has agreed to provide Qchella with web and event services.  These services include Happy Hours, Events, Nightlife, Business listings and community news which will also appear on KGAY1065.com

Chris Shebel, who most recently served as Program Director of KKCW and KLTH Portland, will program KGAY. Shebel has programmed Dance “Energy 92.7/5” WKIE Chicago, “Energy 92.7” KNGY San Francisco, “103.1 The Eighties Channel” WXXY Chicago, 92.3 WPRO-FM Providence, and served multiple terms as Operations Manager of Clear Channel Raleigh.

At the stroke of midnight on December 26th, their new format and positioning debuted on FM 106.5 and AM 1270 in the Palm Springs area, while also streaming on TuneIn Radio worldwide.Businesses will be encouraged to support this not-for-profit programming with an integrated marketing plan that includes membership in the Desert Business Association (the Palm Springs area LGBT chamber of commerce), as well as “Featured Status” on Gay Desert Guide that includes social media promotions and on-air support of the radio station at varying levels.
The History of Qchella Media Corporation:
In 2017, Elijah Hartman had concerns over the shortage of accurate and supportive LGBTQ+ media content across the United States, which he felt was growing daily.  Television, radio, and online media highlighted the increase in homophobia, discrimination, and hate crimes against LGBTQ+ persons. At the same time, these networks engaged in a large-scale pattern and practice of stereotyping, misrepresenting, and underrepresenting LGBTQ+ lives in order to gain ratings.  Given Elijah’s background as a media producer, his work as a business and intellectual property attorney, his non-profit experience, and his strong family connections in broadcasting, Elijah set out to change that, by creating the Qchella Media Corporation, the first-ever LGBTQ+ created, directed, and managed nonprofit media corporation.

In the following months, Elijah ventured to Palm Springs, California, to speak with community leaders and businesses, and worked to bring together a robust coalition of LGBTQ+ experts that were willing to help bring Qchella Media to life. As a LGBTQ+ destination – adored by him and many other LGBTQ+ persons and allies – Palm Springs represented the perfect place to base this new nonprofit venture and make a difference for the expansive and diverse Coachella Valley LGBTQ+ community. After many months of collaboration with community leaders and LGBTQ+ businesses, including Sunnylands Broadcasting, LLC, The Gay Desert Guide, and the Desert Business Association, Qchella Media Corporation was formed.

Their team believes that LGBTQ+ lives are strengthened and affirmed when their stories are told. As a nonprofit corporation, they work to support and foster the diverse voices of their LGBTQ+ community. They feel privileged to produce and broadcast a platform that provides a voice to all LGTBQ+ people, and to support the coalition of LGBTQ+ owned and friendly non-profits, businesses, professionals, and corporations all working promote the health, education, and the strength of their diverse and varied community.
About Qchella Media Corporation:We believe that LGBTQ+ lives are strengthened and affirmed when our stories are told, broadcast, and heard.
