David Perry & Associates, Inc. is proud to partner with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA), an educational nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of the American volunteers who fought fascism in the Spanish Civil War and to promoting social activism and the defense of human rights. ALBA’s work is inspired by the volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, who joined the international fight against fascism in Spain from 1936–1939.
The historic Abraham Lincoln Brigade Monument is poised for restoration and improved accessibility and visibility as part of the upcoming new Sue Bierman Park expansion along San Francisco’s Embarcadero. Dedicated in San Francisco on March 30, 2008, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Monument honors the nearly 3,000 Americans who joined more than 35,000 international volunteers in defense of the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Designed by artists Ann Chamberlain and Walter Hood, the 40-foot-long monument features translucent onyx panels with images, maps, text and quotations that tell the story of the Lincoln volunteers and their enduring fight against fascism. The monument is widely recognized as the only government-supported monument to the Lincoln Brigade in the United States.
Located along San Francisco’s Embarcadero, the monument stands at the intersection of history, civic memory, public art and social justice. As plans move forward for the reimagining of Sue Bierman Park and Embarcadero Plaza, ALBA is working to ensure that this powerful landmark is restored, protected, made more accessible, and given the visibility it deserves for future generations.
