Bay to Breakers and the San Francisco Giants Team Up
to Launch First-Ever Base to Breakers

Unique Running Challenge will Celebrate the Shared History
Between the Bay to Breakers and San Francisco Giants

Challenge Begins Friday, February 24 alongside the Start of Spring Training
and Culminates Friday, May 17 with Runners Night at Oracle Park
when the Giants face off against the Rockies

20 February 2024, San Francisco, CA: Bay to Breakers, the iconic annual foot race that traverses San Francisco, is teaming up with the San Francisco Giants to introduce an exciting and unique running challenge – Base to Breakers. This collaboration celebrates the shared history between two beloved entities and their strong connections to the city of San Francisco.

On Saturday, February 24, in sync with the first day of Spring Training and the Scottsdale Giant Race presented by Alaska Airlines, the Base to Breakers Challenge will infuse the excitement of baseball into participants’ training routines. The challenge offers a fun and engaging way to stay active in anticipation of the Bay to Breakers race weekend.

“I’m thrilled to see the collaboration between Bay to Breakers and the San Francisco Giants come to fruition with the launch of the Base to Breakers Challenge,” said Crystian Kumnick of Bay to Breakers /  Motiv Sports. “This unique running challenge celebrates the shared Bay Area history between our iconic race and the Giants, offering runners the opportunity to integrate their training routines with the excitement of their Bay Area home team – an extra layer of motivation and camaraderie. I look forward to seeing runners of all levels come together at Runners Night at Oracle Park on May 17.”

The Base to Breakers Challenge offers three training levels:

  • Home Run Challenge (BEGINNER <10 miles per week): Participants run or walk one (1) mile for every home run the Giants hit the previous week.
  • Extra Base Challenge (INTERMEDIATE 10-20 miles per week): Participants run or walk one (1) mile for every extra base the Giants hit the previous week.
  • Strike Out Challenge (HARD 20+ miles per week): Participants take on the challenge of running one (1) kilometer for every batter struck out by a Giants pitcher – aptly referred to as “K’s for K’s”.

Spanning nine weeks (to mirror the innings of a baseball game), the challenge culminates in a Runners Night at Oracle Park on May 17, the Friday of the Bay to Breakers race weekend. The first 1,500 people who purchase a Runners Night ticket will receive a limited edition Base to Breakers Runners Cap, from our friends at RNNR. Tickets are available at sfgiants.com/specialevents.

About Bay to Breakers:
Bay to Breakers, like San Francisco, is open to everyone. Participants of all ages and abilities, and oftentimes in costume, line up on Howard Street a few blocks from The Embarcadero on the third Sunday in May (this year, May 19, 2024). The course travels west through the City for 12 kilometers and finishes at the Great Highway, where the breakers crash into Ocean Beach. It truly is a time-honored tradition and the quintessential San Francisco experience.  First run in 1912 as a way to show San Francisco’s resilience and recovery from the Great 1906 Earthquake, Bay to Breakers the world’s longest continuously-run foot rage.

About Giant Race:
The Giant Race presented by Alaska Airlines represents the perfect combination of running and baseball. Launched in 2010 and with previous annual events held in Scottsdale, Sacramento, San Jose and San Francisco, the Giant Race unites an array of Giants-inspired themes at every level of professional baseball. Historically, after stops in Scottsdale during Spring Training and at Minor League facilities in Sacramento and San Jose, the Series ends on the field at Oracle Park with a 20,000-participant race on the flattest and fastest course in San Francisco. The San Francisco Giants and Giants Enterprises work in concert to provide baseball fans and health & wellness enthusiasts an unforgettable journey of run, walk, fitness and training experiences. For more information, visit www.giantrace.com.

About San Francisco Giants:
One of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball, the 141-year old franchise moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958.  After playing a total of 42 years in Seals Stadium and Candlestick Park, the team moved to the privately constructed, downtown ballpark on the corner of 3rd and King in 2000. The organization is widely recognized for its innovative business practices and baseball excellence having been named in the past decade the Sports Organization of the Year by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal, Organization of the Year by Baseball America and ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year.  Oracle Park is also the only ballpark in the country to have earned Silver, Gold and Platinum LEED certification for an existing building.

Since opening its gates, Oracle Park has become internationally-renowned as a premier venue in the world of both sports and entertainment.  On the diamond, more than 69 million spectators have witnessed countless magical moments, including three World Series Championships (2010, 2012 & 2014), the raising of four National League Pennants and eight playoff appearances. The ballpark has also hosted some of music’s biggest acts, including Lady Gaga, Beyoncé & Jay Z, Ed Sheeran, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Green Day and Billy Joel.

Fry Street Quartet

This remarkable quartet – hailed as “a triumph of ensemble playing” by the New York Times – is a multi-faceted ensemble taking chamber music in new directions. The quartet has reached audiences from Carnegie Hall to London, and Sarajevo to Jerusalem, exploring the medium of the string quartet and its life-affirming potential with “profound understanding…depth of expression, and stunning technical astuteness” (Deseret Morning News).

With a discography that includes a wide range of works from Haydn and Beethoven to Stravinsky, Rorem, and Kaminsky, the quartet is known for being “Equally at home in the classic repertoire of Mozart and Beethoven or contemporary music,” (Palm Beach Daily News). The FSQ has commissioned and toured new works by a wide range of composers, and upcoming commissions include quartets by Clarice Assad, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Laura Kaminsky. After more than 50 performances in three different countries, Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project continues to resonate with audiences. A collaboration with physicist Dr. Robert Davies, this fresh approach to communicating society’s sustainability challenges draws upon all the senses with a unique blend of science and art. A film version of the project was released in fall of 2020.

The quartet’s touring history includes performances at major venues and festivals, and for distinguished series such as Carnegie Hall and the Schneider Series at the New School in New York, the Jewel Box series in Chicago, Chamber Music Columbus, the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, the DiBartolo Performing Arts Center at Notre Dame, the Theosophical Society in London, and the Mozart Gemeinde in Klagenfurt, Austria.

The Fry Street Quartet holds the Dan C. and Manon Caine Russell Endowed String Quartet Residency at the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. In 2019 the members of the FSQ were named co-Music Directors of the NOVA Chamber Music Series in Salt Lake City, an appointment that continues through 2024.

United Nations’ UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Endorses San Francisco’s International Ocean Film Festival

21st Annual International Ocean Film Festival Runs
April 12 – 14 in San Francisco

www.intloceanfilmfest.org

7 February 2024 —  San Francisco, CA:  As part of the United Nations’ ongoing work to combat and educate around climate change and other environmental projects, UNESCO’s Ocean Decade Initiative (www.oceandecade.org has officially endorsed the efforts of San Francisco’s International Ocean Film Festival (www.intloceanfilmfest.org). The 21st edition of the International Ocean Film Festival convenes immediately after in San Francisco, April 12 – 14.

“For the work of the International Ocean Film Festival to be recognized by the United Nations is a high honor,” said Ana Blanco, Executive Director for the Festival. “To take part in the Ocean Decade initiative means that our films and filmmakers are seen as an important part of the UN’s work, and to facilitate a transition from ‘the ocean we have’ to ‘the ocean we want: an ocean that supports sustainable development and a healthy ecosystem.”

After a rigorous review process, the International Ocean Film Festival met the following criteria for endorsement:

  • Contributing to fulfilling the Ocean Decade Challenges and to achieving the Decade Objectives and the associated sub-objectives.
  • Accelerating the generation or use of knowledge and understanding of the ocean, with a specific focus on knowledge that will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and complementary policy frameworks
    and initiatives.
  • Deemed to have co-designed or co-delivered by knowledge generators and users, and thus facilitate the uptake of science and ocean knowledge for policy, decision-making, management and/or innovation.
  • Having ensured that all data and resulting knowledge has been provided in an open access, shared, discoverable manner in accordance with the provisions of United Nations Conventions of the Sea and are appropriately deposited in recognized data repositories consistent with the IOC Oceanographic Data Exchange Policy10 or the relevant UN
    subordinate body data policy.
  • Has strengthened existing or created new partnerships across nations and/or between diverse ocean actors, including users of ocean science.
  • Has contributed toward capacity development, including, but not limited to, beneficiaries in Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and Landlocked Developing Countries.
  • Has overcome barriers to diversity and equity, including gender, generational and geographic diversity.
  • Collaborates with and engages local and indigenous knowledge holders.

The Ocean Decade initiative aims to harness, stimulate and empower interdisciplinary ocean research at all levels to support the timely delivery of the data, information and knowledge needed to achieve a well-functioning ocean in support of all Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. The Ocean Decade will not set ocean policy but rather will provide a framework to motivate ocean science and research that can increase understanding and inform policy and decision-making. In order to achieve this, the Ocean Decade will mobilize resources and technological innovation to build capacity, develop scientific knowledge, build and share infrastructure and foster partnerships for a sustainable and healthy ocean.
