Rainbow Honor Walk Salutes Gladys Bentley
Today, on the anniversary of her birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Gladys Bentley (August 12, 1907 – January 18, 1960).
A trailblazing blues singer, pianist and entertainer of the Harlem Renaissance, Bentley captivated audiences with her powerful contralto voice, risqué lyrics and commanding stage presence. Performing in her signature tuxedo and top hat, she openly defied the era’s rigid expectations surrounding race, gender and sexuality.
One of the most celebrated openly lesbian performers of her time, Bentley later brought her groundbreaking act to California, including appearances at Mona’s 440 Club, San Francisco’s pioneering lesbian nightclub. Her fearless artistry and unapologetic self-expression helped pave the way for generations of LGBTQ+ performers.
