Remembering Freddie Mercury, Rainbow Honor Walk honoree
Today on the anniversary of his birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Freddie Mercury (September 5, 1946 – November 24, 1991).
Born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar, Freddie Mercury became one of the most iconic and electrifying performers in rock history as the lead vocalist and principal songwriter of Queen. Renowned for his extraordinary four-octave vocal range, flamboyant stage presence and unforgettable compositions including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love” and “We Are the Champions,” Mercury helped redefine popular music and live performance. His openness about his sexuality and his death from AIDS-related complications in 1991 made him an enduring symbol of LGBTQ+ visibility, artistic freedom and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic.
