Remembering Rainbow Honor Walk Honoree Alan Turing

Today on the anniversary of his birth, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Alan Turing (June 23, 1912 – June 7, 1954).

A visionary British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and pioneer of computer science, Turing helped lay the foundations of modern computing and artificial intelligence. During World War II, his groundbreaking work at Bletchley Park was instrumental in deciphering Nazi Germany’s Enigma codes and advancing the Allied victory. Often called “The Father of Computer Science”, his work made foundational contributions to computing, cryptanalysis and artificial intelligence.

Despite his extraordinary service and genius, Turing was prosecuted in 1952 simply for being gay and subjected to state-sanctioned chemical castration. His persecution remains a powerful reminder of the human cost of anti-LGBTQ+ laws, while his enduring legacy stands as a testament to brilliance, courage and the necessity of equality and justice.
