To end the July 4th long weekend, and kick of high-summer, I offer one more bit of “art vs. history” about one of my favorite films, “1776.” The fascinating YouTube Channel “The Cynical Historian” offers a great overview of the underappreciated 1972 musical without which, we never would have had “Hamilton.” If you’ve never seen “1776”, find it. The numbers “Molassas to Rum” about the Nation’s original sin of slavery and “Mama, Look Sharp” about a young soldier’s death are as stirring today as they were when the movie first hit the screen.
