Twenty-one years of marriage equality in Spain
Twenty-one years of marriage equality in Spain.
On July 3, 2005, Spain’s landmark marriage-equality law came into force, guaranteeing same-sex couples the same rights and responsibilities as every other married couple. The law was approved by Parliament on June 30, 2005, published July 2, and entered into force on July 3.
Spain became only the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage—and the first to grant married same-sex couples full adoption rights.
Twenty-one years later, we celebrate the courage of those who fought for equality, remember that progress is never inevitable, and reaffirm a simple truth:
Love is love. Family is family. Equality is for everyone.
¡Viva España! ¡Viva el amor!
