4 October 2018 – Orvieto, Italy: On the afternoon of Monday, October 8, a group of artists from around the world will be converging on the historical centre of Orvieto. The participants are part of “Exploring Orvieto: Watercolor Sketching in the Perfect Italian Hill Town”: a sketching workshop headed by American artist, Kelly Medford in collaboration with Orvieto resident and writer, Toni DeBella.

Living in Rome since 2010, Ms. Medford has been a frequent visitor to Orvieto over the years. She thinks it’s the perfect location for capturing the essence of life in a hilltop town in Italy. A classically trained American oil and watercolour painter, as well as avid sketcher specializing in Italian landscapes and cityscapes, she has been painting en plein air since 2005.

During the week of October 8-14, the artists can be spotted throughout the city sketching and painting in alleyways, on piazzas, at the market, or along the walls overlooking the countryside. Planned activities include local artisan visits and an excursion to Lake Bolsena.

“What makes this workshop so unique and special”, Kelly explains, “is that we will not only be drawing and painting interesting subjects around the city, but we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the town’s rich culture, adding a depth of experience that will help us see beneath the surface of Orvieto’s stunning beauty.”

On the last Saturday of the workshop (October 13), the community is invited to participate in a free, open sketching event at 10:00 on Piazza Duomo. Complimentary paper and pencils will be handed out and everyone, young and old, is encouraged to attend. Later that evening, there will be an open exhibition of select paintings created by the participants during the weeklong workshop. The exhibition begins at 18:00 at Chioccia Tsarkova bottega di pittura.

“I’m proud to be part of this exciting venture,” says Ms. DeBella, “and I hope that this will be the first of many like it in the future.”
