23 June 2026: Happy 26th Anniversary to Adriano Llata de Miranda and Lee Fontaine Maury, protagonists of David Eugene Perry’s award winning bestseller “Upon This Rock” and its underway sequel “Thorns of the 15 Roses.”
“Upon This Rock” upon La Noche de San Juan en Grazalema, Andalucía, Cádiz, España — especially significant as this is the night “Rock’s” protagonists, Adriano & Lee, first met: 23 June 2003, in Barcelona.
Today — 23 June 2026 — Adriano and Lee set sail from San Francisco onboard the M/S Ithaka headed for Spain in time for the Feast of Carmen on 16 July. Along the way, well, to quote one of the ship’s mysterious passengers: “This cruise will be murder.”
The night of Saint John originates from Ancient Greece where they had multiple festivals to honor the god Apollo (the god of music), when they would celebrate the summer solstice, called “the door of men”. Later on, the Romans also adopted this tradition.
Festivals that were celebrated during the classical period are similar to what we have today. However, the nature of this special night is today mainly connected to Christianity, specifically the Biblical character John the Baptist.
