Remembering Rikki Streicher / Rainbow Honor Walk honoree

Today, on the anniversary of her death, we celebrate the life and legacy of Rainbow Honor Walk honoree Rikki Streicher (1922 – August 21, 1994).

A pioneering San Francisco lesbian activist, entrepreneur and community leader, Streicher opened Maud’s in the Haight-Ashbury in 1966. For 23 years, it served not only as a bar but as an important gathering place and community center for generations of lesbians. In 1978, she opened Amelia’s on Valencia Street, another landmark of San Francisco lesbian life.

Streicher was also a leader in the early LGBTQ rights organization Society for Individual Rights and a passionate advocate for gay and lesbian athletics. She helped found the Gay Olympics — later renamed the Gay Games — and the Federation of Gay Games. In recognition of her lasting contribution to LGBTQ sports and community life, San Francisco’s Rikki Streicher Field in the Castro was named in her honor.
