2 June 2017 – San Mateo, CA: The future can be seen today at the first ever Tech Action Zone at the San Mateo County Fair! New this year, the Tech Action Zone will showcase robot and drone demonstrations offered by local organizations. Fairgoers will be able to view the latest from FIRST Robotics teams and also learn how to operate, fly and photograph with aerial “quadcopters” from FAA-Certified “Drone Expert” Beto Lopez.

Over nine days of diverse entertainment, June 10 – 18, the San Mateo County Fair 2017 is living up to its “Tradition Meets Innovation” motto like never before. In addition to this year’s inaugural Tech Action Zone, the public will have the opportunity to enjoy game coding workshops from the Digital Monkey School located in Belmont, learn to fold recycled origami, make crafts with upcycling designer fabrics, and compete in contests showcasing creative STEM and sustainability ideas of their own.

“This is a uniquely San Mateo experience,” observed Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Events Center and Fair, “and the San Mateo County Fair is the perfect place to experience and enjoy the cutting-edge innovation, technology and sustainable living opportunities that are integral to our community.”

“It’s like nothing we’ve seen or done before,” said Joseph Lees, Department Coordinator for the San Mateo County Fair Technology & Industrial Arts Department. “There is already quite a buzz about the contests and the Tech Action Zone which will be interactive, informative and fun – all in one!”

Again this year there are contests featuring imaginative ideas or actions that demonstrate sustainability and creative repurposing of used cardboard in the Upcycle category.

But many area residents will enter the annual sustainable living contests as a family or community affair with parents, kids, husbands, wives, extended family members and neighbors coming together to enter new ideas every year. Participants such as the Brisbane Community Garden’s perennial compost contestants, Marge Kastner who, with her husband, has created award winning entries by repurposing trash collected from walks along the Bay or local artist Paul Powell, who creates multi-media art such as the fairgoer favorite, a large scorpion constructed from abandoned farm machinery parts.

FabMo (Fabric & More), Lyngso Garden Materials, Inc., and Reach & Teach are the sponsors of the 2017 Sustainable Living Special Awards. Visitors can see their displays at the Sustainable Living Exhibit featuring cutting edge local organizations demonstrating the latest in technological and sustainable products for a healthy planet.

Sponsors for the 2017 San Mateo County Fair are: Pepsi, Coors Light, Blue Moon, Sprint, Mattress Firm, Furniture Firm, Groupon, Lucky California, Lucky, Lifetime, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, xfinity, First Choice Communications, Great Destinations, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, SamTrans, Goldrush Getaways, Verizon Cellular Sales, Welk Resorts, The San Francisco Examiner and The Daily Journal.

30 May 2017 – San Mateo, CA: What better way to celebrate the Summer of Love, than with a return to the extraordinary soundtrack that gave us all those memories? The San Mateo County Fair (www.sanmateocountyfair.com) honors the rich musical legacy of the Bay Area’s Summer of Love with a whopping line up of familiar bands that helped shape – or were influenced by – the Summer of Love scene. For nine days, June 10 – 18, fairgoers can dance and groove to the beats that made history. Headlined by two nights – June 14 – 15 – from the creator of the “East Bay Sound” Tower of Power, this year’s concert series kicks off with the iconic band War (June 10), a special tribute Summer of Love-Live! (June 11), the “psychedelic soul” of The Family Stone with the Oakland Symphony- (June 12); and the amazing Paramount’s Original Laser Spectacular, featuring the music of Pink Floyd (June 13). The Fair’s final weekend culminates with the pioneers of street funk The Ohio Players (June 16); the ultimate summer party band Smash Mouth (June 17) and traditional Latin Music focused Día De La Feria (June 18).

Sponsors for the 2017 Concert Series at the San Mateo County Fair are: Pepsi, Coors Light, Blue Moon, Sprint, Mattress Firm, Furniture Firm, Groupon, Lucky California, Lucky, Lifetime, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, xfinity, First Choice Communications, Great Destinations, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, SamTrans, Goldrush Getaways, Verizon Cellular Sales, Welk Resorts, The SF Examiner and The Daily Journal.

“We’ve got an iconic line-up this year,” summed up Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Events Center and Fair, noting that the tradition of the Bay Area as a hotbed of music from 50 years ago lives on today. “Tower of Power continues to be a rich part of the Bay Area’s cultural heritage, gaining new fans every year. We’re so proud to have them back and to be joined by other icons of the era such as War, The Ohio Players and The Family Stone. Combined with the special tributes to many other legends of the era in the fabulous Summer of Love – LIVE! Concert and the Laser Spectacular featuring music of Pink Floyd – it’s going to be an amazing fair!”

“This year’s concert series is so special because it features some of the true greats from the original Summer of Love,” and many from the California music scene that came up soon thereafter,” said Kaitlyn Bailey-Findley, Fair Operations Manager .“We’re so honored to have Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Greg Errico and Jerry Martini with The Family Stone who helped pioneer the “psychedelic soul” sound of the era, Lonnie Jordan, a founding member of War and of course, the innovator Emilio Castillo, founding member of Tower of Power. All of these folks made music history right here in our backyard – and they did it by combining a mix of genres, including jazz, rock, funk, soul, R&B and Latin, which continues to speak to audiences today.”

A highlight of this year’s concert series which builds upon the theme of great music in our own backyard, is the appearance of Smash Mouth, a San Jose based band that rose to prominence in the 1990’s. The band will help close out the fair’s festivities on June 17, playing many of its well-known hits plus its recently released CD “MAGIC” that promises to offer “a no holds barred party from start to finish.”

In a category by itself, the annual Dia de la Feria on Sunday June 18 turns the San Mateo County Fair into “Little Latin America” with a rousing afternoon of Spanish-language songs and South-of-the-Border cultural influences.

“There was something for everyone in the music of the 1960s and there is something for everyone at the San Mateo County Fair today” according to Bailey-Findley who reminds everyone: “Don’t forget to tweet out using the hashtag: #SMCF2017.”

About St. Paulus San Francisco:

One hundred and fifty years ago a group of rebellious Lutherans from an adjoining Lutheran church convinced a just fired Lutheran pastor to form a new church in San Francisco. Jacob Buehler did and named it Saint Paulus Lutheran Church. Since then, the church established a Lutheran Day School that has educated thousands of San Franciscan children until 1990. After building a 1000-seat Gothic church building at the corner of Gough and Eddy that narrowly endured the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, St. Paulus was the location of a hospital and shelter for over 10,000 in the aftermath of the disaster.

The landmark edifice was featured in the 1958 Hitchcock movie, Vertigo, and was the site of the extraordinary ordination of the first three gay Lutheran pastors, an event covered around the world with still an ongoing social and religious impact. After a spectacular and tragic arson fire in 1995, St. Paulus’ historic sanctuary burned to the ground. And yet, St. Paulus continued to host, feed, guide, and provide for homeless in San Francisco, spending six years as a storefront church in the Fillmore. Now, the historic congregation enters its fourth year as a storefront church on Polk Street, but is eagerly anticipating the construction of a new Saint Paulus Church facility in 2018 at the corner of Gough and Eddy Streets.

Race Organizers & City Officials Stress Safety and Sobriety for
106th Running of Historic Race on Sunday, May 21

16 May 2017 – San Francisco, CA: This year’s Alaska Airlines Bay to Breakers Race on Sunday, May 21, marks the 106th running of one of the world’s best-loved sporting and celebratory events. More than ever, City officials and Race organizers are serious about keeping the Race free from alcohol abuse and nuisance behavior.

“Bay to Breakers has always been a great time for everyone,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. “In years past because of binge alcohol consumption, there was a negative impact of our neighborhoods and we don’t want to see that repeated. That said, we hope that everyone will come and have a great time again, absent any alcohol.”

To emphasize the point, a special campaign website is active at www.baytobreakersSFcom with public transit information, rules and regulations and links stressing this year’s campaign. The public safety message is also being magnified via a campaign on Facebook and Twitter.

“Last year’s running of Bay to Breakers was a success,” said Chief Scott. “We urge registrants and spectators to come out this year, and to remember the first rule: to have a great time, and remember to preserve our race, the neighborhoods, and our beautiful City. We look forward to seeing everyone on race day having a fun and safe time.”
