MORE THAN 10,000 SAN FRANCISCO HOTEL WORKERS UNEMPLOYED

Almost half of city’s hotels remain closed; hurt by new “Healthy Buildings” ordinance

3 August 2020 — SAN FRANCISCO, CA: More than 10,000 San Francisco hotel employees are out of work and nearly half of the city’s hotels are closed representing more than half of all guest rooms, according to state data compiled through July 31 as San Francisco remains one of only four California counties not allowing hotels to reopen, the Hotel Council of San Francisco announced today.

The 10,899 employees furloughed, temporarily laid off and, increasingly, permanently laid off, represent 44 percent of San Francisco’s 25,000 hotel workers while the 92 closed hotels represent 42 percent of the city’s 215 hotels. The data was compiled by the California Employment Development Department and with the Hotel Council’s own statistics.

Hotels have not been allowed to be open for tourists since mid-March and now face increased health risks for employees imposed by the Board of Supervisors’ “Healthy Buildings” ordinance signed by Mayor Breed on July 17. The ordinance demands the daily cleaning of guest rooms even when the guest stays a second night, increasing the risk of COVID-19 transmission, which is counter to all public health recommendations.

“The new so-called ‘Healthy Buildings’ ordinance has made a bad situation worse,” said Kevin Carroll, President and CEO of the Hotel Council of San Francisco. “San Francisco’s hotels already are prepared to have the most-stringent cleaning protocols in the nation. Many of our hotel jobs will never come back as some hotels will be forced to close forever.”

San Francisco hotels have worked closely with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, Gov. Newsom, California Department of Public Health, Cal/OSHA and San Francisco’s public health office to develop health safety standards that exceed any other industry, short of hospitals. Those Clean + Safe guidelines were issued more than two months before the Healthy Buildings ordinance became law. The hotel health standards for employees include:

  • Customized COVID-19 plans to include all areas of a hotel’s operations
  • Employee safety trainings in English & Spanish
  • Clear and appropriate social distancing signage
  • Delivery and use of personal protective equipment for employees
  • Cleaning directions that keep employees and guests safe

The hotel standards follow the CDC, CDPH and Cal/OSHA recommendations that have been utilized as guidance for reopening by 54 of 58 California counties.

Third “Shop for a Cause” Benefits Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs

Friday, August 7: 3pm – 8pm

31 July 2020 – Palm Springs, CA:  On Friday, August  7“Retail Therapy” takes on a whole new meaning as Palm Springs Retailers hosts the third Shop for a Cause, this year benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Spring. From 3pm – 8pm that day, each retailer will donate a portion of sales during that period to the esteemed nonprofit helping our Palm Springs young people. The Palm Springs Retailers group consists of almost 100 Palm Springs retail stores and is a sub-group of Main Street Palm Springs Downtown & Uptown Business Association.

“Retailers have been hurt especially hard with the pandemic and with the summer we are facing increased challenges.  We developed the Shop for a Cause series of events as a way to support each other as well as our community,” said Jeffrey Bernstein, owner of Destination PSP and a Board Member of Main Street Palm Springs. “The Boys and Girls Club is an incredible organization and the business community was unanimously and enthusiastically in favor of supporting it.”

Additionally, all participating retailers have taken the pledge to provide a safe shopping experience.  Participating retailers will offer a combination of in-store, curbside pickup, online and appointment shopping to ensure that all customers have a comfortable way to shop.

The Boys and Girls Club of Palm Springs was chosen as the beneficiary as this is also back-to-school week, although most children will still have to learn remotely.  The business community felt compelled to support the kids during this difficult time.

“During the pandemic we have had to be very creative in developing new ways to reach the kids, which has been quite a challenge for our staff,” said Margaret Keung, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club. “There are also many expenses being incurred in order to maintain the proper safety guidelines for our children as they come back to the Boys and Girls Club.  We are very grateful to the retailers and the community for this event.”

Main Street Palm Springs exists to join together as fellow businesses to proactively and aggressively represent the interests and contributions of the downtown and uptown business community to existing and potential customers and to represent our common interests to Palm Springs municipal leaders.

The Boys and Girls Club of Palm Springs is committed to serving the youth in and around the City of Palm Springs. Their programs strive to instill strong character, leadership skills, academic success and healthy living habits amongst its members and see them through to high school graduation. In doing so, the organization is committed to growing and retaining a solid membership foundation that will focus on pillars of community service, education, arts, and health and wellness.

“Our members are our number one priority,” said Keung. “Our programs are designed to build confidence, offer facilities and equipment for education and learning, act as a safe haven that deters members from dangerous situations, and employ professional and caring staff members to teach and promote these values on a daily basis.”
