13 June 2016 – San Mateo, CA: Being all grown up has its advantages: wisdom, the ability to take life’s little challenges more in stride, and free admission on Tuesday, June 14 — “Senior Day” at the San Mateo County Fair (www.sanmateocountyfair.com)

“The San Mateo County Fair is fun for all ages,” said Dana Stoehr, COO of the Fair. “Having said that, on Senior Day, it’s even more fun — and special and free for those of our wiser and experienced-in-life, 62 and older.”

A special addition to this year’s salute to our elders is a contingent of original WWII “Rosie the Riveter” ladies. These homefront veterans, aged 89 to 96, are ongoing volunteers at the World War II Homefront Memorial National Park in Richmond, California situated next to where thousands of “Rosies” worked to build ships, jeeps and other military vehicles in the early 1940s.

“Having the Rosies onsite anytime, anywhere is a great honor,” said Stoehr whose idea it was to include them in the Senior Day festivities. “In addition to a special tribute to the Rosies at 2pm, there will be several exhibitors specifically present for Senior Day from 11am to 3pm. In addition, we’ll have special entertainment that we know our seniors, and Rosies, will enjoy.”

Emphasizing its culinary and mixology offerings this year, Liam Mayclem, internationally recognized “Foodie Chap” of KCBS Radio fame, kicked off the Fair’s opening day. Throughout the week, the free concert series features performers for which the Fair has become rightly famous: Night Ranger (June 11); Lone Star (June 12); The Boys of Summer – Eagles Tribute Band (June 13); Kansas (June 14); Tower of Power (June 15 & 16); The Spinners (June 17); The Peninsula Symphony (June 18); and, of course, the traditional closing-out-of-the Fair Latin Music focused Día De La Feria (June 19).

Sponsors for the 2016 Concert Series at the San Mateo County Fair are: Coors Light, Blue Moon, Gold Rush Getaways, Sleeptrain Mattress Centers, Lifetime, First Choice Communications, Bay Area Air Quality Managment District, Welk Resorts, xfinity, Paradise Spas, SamTrans and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

• Fair Food – Alligator on a Stick, Fried Kool Aid, and The Healthy Food Fare – Our Healthy Food Fare initiative is back with healthy choices being provided by many Fair vendors. But don’t worry: your Fair favorites will still be available from barbeque to funnel cake.
• Science, Technology, DIY Science Exhibits are back – Young people get hands on experience with innovative new concepts and devices such as 3-D printers. See how much fun a Do-It-Yourself environment can be for kids! In addition, 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), painting, fine art, cooking, literary arts, cooking and healthy eating are just part of the fun.
• Free Grounds Acts – We’re excited to present the debut of the life-size Mousetrap, first introduced at MakerFaire and a huge hit. The 16-piece, 25 ton replica of the classic board game delivers a unique brand of engineering entertainment to kids of all ages. Combining Newtonian physics, performers and good old fashioned elbow grease, the life-size mouse trap utilizes all the six simple machines made from common materials to navigate eight pound bowling balls around a kinetically-driven course. In addition the Fairgoer will see traditional pony rides, pig races, characters strolling throughout the grounds, and much more. This year, new offerings include hypnotist Kellie Karl-Hypnotist, San Francisco street performers, Chef Landry, the Great American Petting Zoo and AgVenture and the “All Alaskan Racing Pigs. ”
• Carnival Rides including The Freak Out is Back! The Fair introduced this new carnival ride in 2014. It flies passengers 40 feet into the air. The Freak Out joins Fair favorites like the Ferris Wheel, Zillerator, and roller coasters

WHY: Sharing The Joy and Accessibility of Sailing
Summer Sailstice celebrates the joy, adventure and accessibility of sailing for people from all backgrounds. While sailing often is portrayed as an elite sport, in actuality it is a fun, accessible sport shared by people from all walks of life. The vast majority of the millions of sailors worldwide, including more than 3 million in the United States, sail small boats, crew on other people’s boat or are members of community sailing and club programs.
Locally, San Francisco Bay is world-renowned as a sailing mecca and home to many world champion racers and successful world cruisers. There are almost 10,000 sailboats in the water between Stockton and San Jose and thousands more in dinghy racks, backyards and community programs like Shoreline, Cal Sailing, Lake Merritt, Treasure Island, and other on-land storage locations.
Additionally, Summer Sailstice celebrates accessibility to the outdoors and to nature, highlighting the Bay’s large ‘open space’ that is easily accessible to the Bay Area’s 7+ million residents. Summer Sailstice has joined with Sailors for the Sea to inform and mobilize sailors, their families and communities to enjoy and conserve the beauty of the oceans and to raise awareness of human impacts on the fragile marine environment and wildlife.

The Summer Sailstice San Francisco Festival is Northern California’s largest on-the-water celebration for everyone who loves sailing. Founded in 2001 by Bay Area resident John Arndt, Summer Sailstice has grown to become an annual global celebration of sailing in over 40 countries worldwide. Held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice, the free annual event that began with 200 boats sailing in the San Francisco Bay in 2001 will have close to 5,000 boats participating across the globe in 2016. Nearly 19,000 sailors will be aboard those boats on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19th with a schedule of local events worldwide that encourage the community to join in on the fun and celebrate sailing.
The San Francisco Festival is a collaboration of numerous SailSFBay.org affiliates launching from the primary location of Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda on June 18th.
